Why Blog? A journey in more ways than one.

Sometimes life brings us unexpected events, some of which are so serious they leave us grasping at logical answers and solutions, however this fragility also opens the mind to those dreams we had as children. My love of narrowboats started with my fathers love of the sea and a glittering career in the Navy; this allowed a young me to experience the Grand Union on a beautiful large Royal Navy owned narrowboat. Further we had one of the best holidays I’ve ever had on the Norfolk Broads (which is a completely different experience from the “main” canal network in England).

Covid hit and an unplanned departure from my existing career to focus on home-schooling and coming to terms with my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and Generalised Anxiety Disorder, the comorbidity of the two feeding off each other to make a perfect storm. There were two choices, accept defeat or find a way to adapt with the uncertainty of life. I am a fighter and I am blessed to have my parents, wife and daughter in my corner and began looking for a way to fight on…

Now the really crazy part…

Whilst sat in my weekly psychiatrist appointment my wife mentioned a lifelong dream to live on a narrowboat (I blame Rosie and Jim!) I am surprised he didn’t take my wife on immediately for such an unusual lifestyle wish! instead (I still thank him for saving my life) he cheerfully, after some time thinking, actually encouraged us to “take the plunge” and so our search for a narrowboat began….
